LEADERSHIP

A LETTER
FROM THE CEO

The Mobile Area Education Foundation (MAEF) was founded in 1992 by Carolyn R. Akers as a convener of diverse community stakeholders around our local public education challenges. Our mission is to realize bold solutions that dramatically improve the success of youth in Mobile County. For over 30 years, we have served as an advocate and activist for public schools in Mobile County. We have been Mobile’s lead agency on many education-focused improvement initiatives including: helping to pass the first property tax increase for public education in 41 years, which represents millions of dollars annually in additional public school funding, and founding ACCEL Academy, Alabama’s first public charter school, whose mission is to develop personalized educational pathways to help disconnected youth find success in college, careers, and civic life.

While we are proud of our collective accomplishments to improve education in Mobile County, there is much more work to do to deliver on the promise that we create a community that puts children first, a community where every child is nurtured, well educated, and reaches adulthood ready for success.  To achieve this vision, we believe it takes three things (1) an engaged and caring community that helps young people thrive, (2) excellent schools that help youth reach their full academic potential , (3) and education/workforce partnerships that ensure every child is career-ready.  We are focused on delivering on these three key priorities in partnership with education, industry, and civic leaders across our community. Please join us in our efforts to help build a community that puts children first. Every volunteer hour and every dollar contributed puts us one step closer to improving the quality of life for every young person in Mobile County.

In partnership,

Dr. Jeremiah Newell
