Extending into the middle grades

Another example of the growing influence of Mobile Math on local teachers is now under way in 3 area middle schools. Given the challenges inherent in maintaining academic progress among adolescent youth, the need for the kind of strong professional development and ongoing teacher support provided by the Mobile Math initiative is evident.

The middle grades extension of MMI is already making a positive impact on participating teachers.

Judy Duke, a MMI coach at the middle school sites, says she has been amazed at how open to new ideas the teachers she works with have been.

"They're really willing to try something new even though these unfamiliar strategies are often difficult to master," she explained. "They have a real desire to do what's best for their kids."

Ms. Duke said she has been particulary struck by the success of 2 special education teachers that have begun teaching their students using the Mobile Math approach - at grade-level standards - with great sucess. She said their classes are making remarkable progress.
